The Grosvenor Square Kitchen

This splendid Georgian townhouse was the subject of a 2 year renovation, where our client’s brief to her designer was to create an environment “better than any hotel, superlatively comfortable, flexible to their needs and alive.” Indeed the house has the feel of a living piece of art.

The kitchen is part of a dramatic open plan space filled with sculpture and artworks, making copper the natural choice for the cabinetry, its warm tones enhancing the theatrical quality of the light filled interior. Our client was immediately drawn to the verdigris tones in the original copper sample we developed for her. From there, we embarked on a months–long  process of refining the patination, carefully developing the finish on each sheet of copper until it perfectly matched her vision.

A bespoke protective finish was developed to make the copper durable enough for everyday use in a kitchen. Likewise the island is topped with a sheet of low iron glass that protects the surface while creating the illusion of a solid cube of verdigris copper. Elsewhere travertine marble is used on the surfaces and the floating  shelf above the sink.

As there is a commercial kitchen behind the scenes to handle the practical demands of cooking, the brief was to design the main kitchen with pared back elegance, allowing the copper to take centre stage. However, generous storage was essential. Behind the solid copper doors are a larder and breakfast cupboard and many other bespoke storage solutions, while the space beneath the stairs has been fully utilised with discreet painted cabinetry designed to recede into the background rather than compete with the copper kitchen. 
The result is a kitchen of remarkable restraint – more akin to a finely crafted piece of contemporary furniture than a conventional kitchen, sitting effortlessly within the architecture of this room.

The Library

Our client wanted the library to work as a home office space for herself and her husband, as well as it being a wonderfully comfortable space to relax. Burr poplar was selected as the material for the shelves and cabinetry, its richly figured grain bringing warmth and depth to the space. The library demanded exceptional craftsmanship, with specialist metalworkers fabricating the staircase and weeks spent meticulously book matching the burr poplar veneers to the solid timber used for the structural elements, ensuring a seamless continuity of pattern and colour throughout.

The result.. an exquisite library so inviting it resembles a luxurious chocolate box!
